Car search status — 2026-11-05

Hertz.com: "sold out" at all Tokyo locations tried and at Narita for Dec 1 – 8, 2026 (reported by Eric, not re-checked here). Cause not determined. Hertz Hamamatsucho's own page lists 1-3-11 Shibadaimon, Tokyo, daily 8am – 8pm, but it did not appear as bookable in Eric's search. Toyota Rent a Car Shin-Osaka Station shop: 4-2-16 Miyahara, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka 532-0003, +81 6-6397-1000 (third-party listing; one-way drop-off and hours unconfirmed; Toyota's site blocks automated reading). Tokyo pickup options seen on Toyota's search: Shinagawa Station (my pick, unverified reasoning) or Tokyo Station.

Decisions owed

Fuji stay: wait for Ubuya (opens ~late Jan 2027) or hold Kasuitei Ohya now?
Ohya is $748 for two nights and fully refundable before Apr 17, so holding it costs nothing but a cancellation task. Ubuya is the first choice and is est. $1,200+ (unverified).
Car for Fuji and Kyoto photo days, or train plus a hired driver?
No car has been found yet. If the one-way Tokyo → Osaka rental stays unavailable, Kyoto day-tour guide (Apr 27 or 28) plus train and taxi to Fuji covers the shoots. Recommendation in the workbook was one rental, Tokyo Apr 24 to Kobe/Osaka May 4.
Return the car at Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, or Sannomiya?
May 4 train to Tokyo. Shin-Osaka has the most Nozomi service (general knowledge, unverified); Shin-Kobe does not get Nozomi. Tocen is in Arima Onsen, about 45 km from Shin-Osaka.
Busan (Apr 13): go ashore, and if so confirm K-ETA?
The port call is on the Seabourn itinerary for CVWQWD. Entry rules for cruise passengers are unresolved; ask Seabourn or check k-eta.go.kr.
Book the Kyoto photo guide?
Top pick is Paul Crouse (JPY 140,000 full day, ~US$895 plus expenses). Pick Apr 27 or 28, before Golden Week. No reviews seen; ask for references.
